Post spacing decides how sturdy your fence feels, how much material it takes, and how good the finished line looks. Space posts too far apart and rails sag between them; too close and you’re buying and setting posts you didn’t need. Here’s the standard spacing for each fence type and how to get an even, professional-looking run.
The standard: 6 to 8 feet
For most wood and vinyl fences, posts are set 6 to 8 feet apart, measured center to center. That range is the sweet spot: close enough that the rails don’t sag under their own weight, far enough that you’re not wasting posts and concrete.
- 8 feet is the most common spacing for wood fences and matches standard 8-foot rail lengths, so there’s little cutting.
- 6 feet makes a stiffer fence — worth it for tall privacy fences, windy sites, or heavier materials.
Spacing by fence type
Different fences have different rules:
- Wood privacy or picket: 6–8 feet, with 8 feet the default when using pre-cut 8-foot rails.
- Pre-built panels: the panel width is your spacing — 6 or 8 feet — since posts must land at each panel edge. There’s no choosing here; the panel decides.
- Chain link: line posts go up to 10 feet apart, the widest of the common types, because the fabric and top rail carry the span.
- Vinyl: follow the manufacturer — vinyl posts and rails are engineered for a specific spacing, usually 6 or 8 feet.
Why even spacing matters
Beyond strength, consistent spacing is what makes a fence look professionally built. A run where the last bay is suddenly 3 feet while the rest are 8 looks like a mistake. The fix is to divide the total run into equal sections rather than setting a fixed spacing from one end and letting the leftover pile up at the far corner.
If your run is 50 feet, six equal 8.3-foot bays look far better than six 8-foot bays and a stubby 2-foot one at the end. Slope changes this too — on a hillside, slightly shorter, equal bays step more cleanly than long ones.
How spacing changes your material list
Every post you add or remove ripples through the whole build. Wider spacing means fewer posts, less concrete and fewer holes to dig — but longer, potentially saggier rail spans. Tighter spacing is sturdier but costs more posts and labor.
